Michael Gitlin, born 1943 in Cape Town, studied in Jerusalem and New York.

Since 1970 he lives and works in New York. He received numerous awards and scholarships, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, the Israel Museum Sandberg prize.

Since 1975 he participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide, including 1976 Galerie Schmela, Düsseldorf; 1977 Daniel Museum, Jerusalem; 1978 Stampa gallery, Basel; 1986 Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus, Munich; 1988 Jessica Berwind Gallery, Philadelphia; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn; 1989 Städdt. Kunsthalle, Mannheim; Gallery Schüppenhauer, Cologne; 1990 Cargegie Mellon art gallery, Pittsburgh; 1991 MUHKA, Antwerp, 2003 Slought Foundation, Philadelphia; 2006 Nelly Aman Gallery, Tel Aviv.
